The Roman Catholic Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is perhaps the most famous church in all of Savannah and certainly the most visible church on Savannah's skyline. It is the mother church for the Diocese of Savannah and seat of its Bishop, Most Reverend Stephen Parkes. Interestingly, the most iconic church building in Savannah would not have been allowed under the original charter for the Colony of Georgia, which forbade Catholics. The congregation was first established in 1796. Today, the Cathedral Basilica is one of Savannah's Best Tourist Attractions. In 2020, the Cathedral was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica by Pope Francis, becoming only the 2nd basilica in the State of Georgia.
