Savannah's Famous People

A look at those who contributed to Savannah's History or Culture

Arriving in Savannah in the 18 century, the well-respected British architect William Jay contributed greatly to the architectural scene in Savannah. He designed some of our city's most recognizable landmark attractions.

One of the great fortunes of General Oglethorpe was meeting Mary Musgrove prior to arriving at Yamacraw Bluff. Musgrove was with Oglethorpe and the colonists when they landed at Yamacraw Bluff. She was half-Indian and served as an interpreter between General Oglethorpe and the local Indian chief Tomochichi. With the aid of her interpretive skills, Oglethorpe and Tomochichi struck up a friendship and the two cultures peacefully coexisted.

James Edward Oglethorpe founded the last of Great Britain's 13 American Colonies. As the founder of the colony of Georgia and its first colonial capital, the city of Savannah, Oglethorpe is a significant figure in the history of the Peach State and the Hostess City of the South.
