Everything is Green in Savannah on St. Patrick's Day
Running through the heart of Savannah you’ll see a lot of the color green. However, one day of the year there is more green than any other — March 17th! This is the day St. Patrick is celebrated and the exponential explosion of green in Savannah on that day is due to the fact hundreds of thousands of people flock into the landmark historic district for the 2nd largest parade in the USA.
On St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, green is on everyone . Almost everyone is wearing green — green hats, green shirts, green shoes, green pants — you can’t escape the explosion of green.
Green is traditional color of St. Patrick’s Day. It all goes back to the Shamrock with its three sprigs. Tradition holds that St. Patrick used the three sprigs of the shamrock to teach the pagan Irish about God and the nature of the Trinity — Father, Son and Holy Spirit. By having a visual air that he could point to showing one shamrock has 3 distinguishable parts, he was able to communicate the message effectively. Since shamrocks are green, this is how the official color of St. Patrick’s Day is also green.
So if you are in Savannah
on the day of the oldest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the United States, you will be seeing a lot of green and now you know why!
GREEN DOGS
Green bulldogs, green poodles and even green pugs aren’t hard to find in Savannah on St. Patrick’s Day. Dog owners go all out for the parade and bring their green dog with matching green collars and leashes too!
The water in Layfayette Fountain, The Wormsloe Fountain in Columbia Square and the Forsyth Park Fountain in Forsyth Park
all become green in the days preceding the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. If you love to toss a coin into a fountain and make a wish, your luck may be even better when the water is green. They don’t call it the “Luck of the Irish” for nothing!

GREEN BEER
This might be the most fun green item to look for! Beer is the most popular drink in Savannah on March 17th across all age groups. Some bars really get into the spirit and serve green beer, although its more likely you will find this at a private party than in a bar or tavern. Of course, depending on how many beers you drink on St. Patrick’s Day, you may begin to see lots of green things!
Many of the Irish groups gather for breakfast before the day’s festivities begin. It’s not uncommon for them to serve green grits or other green dyed food to really put everyone in the mood for the biggest day of the year (at least if you are Irish)!
